The 13th Annual Great West Trailer & Truck Rocky
Mountain Super Races Presented by Formula 707 Barrel racers traveled from as far away as South Dakota, Texas, New Mexico and Nebraska to enjoy the stunning Colorado landscape and great camaraderie shared by all the contestants. It was Colorado’s own Courtney Ford who swept the Open 1D average with times of 17.416, 17.268 and 17.205 to take home a Bob Berg trophy buckle, Formula 707 and Wrangler gift certificates as well as a Classic Equine trophy saddle blanket, not to mention $2,051 in cash for her weekend efforts. Equally as impressive is that Ford was not the only big winner. The top four in the average in each “D” were awarded top notch, first class prizes courtesy of sponsors such as Formula 707 and Wrangler. Taking high
money winner honors and finishing second in the 1D average was Elbert, Colo.
cowgirl Kim Schulze, who jockeyed two Frenchmans Guy-bred geldings, French
Dream and Vegaspeed, to $2,959 in earnings. New Mexico’s Koell Rios rode JJ
Cross Dawg to third while Karen Turek and Major Bully rounded out the top four
in the 1D average. Taking top 2D average honors was Jeff Varner and VQ In The
Blink Of An Eye; the 3D went to Dammy Johnson and MFR Power Of Ernie and the 4D
title went to Kegan Huckle and Senor Rima. Shali Lord of
Lamar, Colo. earned an impressive $2,762 over the course of the weekend when
she raced to victory on Saturday evening during the thrilling first annual
Spin3 Super Slot Race. Lord posted a 17.144 aboard Cashin Ease to edge Laura
Lambert and The Money Chaser by almost 2/10s of a second. The Slot Race, which
was limited to 40 slot owners, featured the top horse and rider teams in the
region with the likes of Lord, NFR qualifier Kelly Yates, and reigning Mountain
States Circuit Champion Lambert all running their way to big bucks. To add to
the fun, Yampa Valley Beef donated plenty of their delicious product for a
Contestant/VIP BBQ and Calcutta on Friday evening. Sylvia McComber expertly
prepared the food with help from other barrel racers who brought plenty of
great side dishes. Run on a 2D
format, the Slot Race awarded Bob Berg trophy buckles, Classic saddle pads and
totes, as well as Formula 707 gift certificates to the top four places in each
“D.” Nicole Schmidt and her gelding Skipa Printz, who ran for slot owner Danny
Beck Quarter Horses, topped the 2D portion of the slot race in 17.645 seconds
to earn $1,841. Rosemary Egolf guided Get A Holt to second in the 2D posting a
time of 17.680 worth $1,381. Jeff Varner finished third in the 2D while Ranette
Taylor rounded out the placings. Average winners
in the $2,500 Novice Rider and $1,000 Novice Horse were awarded Bob Berg trophy
buckles courtesy of Emerald Ranch and Spin3 Productions, respectively. Kegan
Huckle and Senor Rima emerged as the $2,500 Novice Rider champions, while Jeff
Varner and Larkin To The Moon topped the Novice Horse division. Youth and
Senior average titles went to Cassidy Wahlert aboard Miss Cooper Reed and Cheryl
Robson and King Bug Jetta, respectively. For
